Industrial Art & Technology Exhibition (INATEX) – 2012
Industrial Art & Technology Exhibition (INATEX) is a UTM-wide yet prestige event that organized by Research Management Centre (RMC). This exhibition is R&D showcase and competition of UTM inventions and innovations developed by UTM researchers. The purpose of INATEX is to promote the research findings or product to the public by exhibiting the creative inventions and innovative products from the UTM researcher. INATEX is a screening platform for UTM Product for the competition at national and international level. INATEX also as a mechanism to enhance collaboration between researchers and industry which in line with the theme for INATEX 2012: “Sustainable: Commercialization through Innovative R&D”. This event was successfully held on 3rd October 2012 until 5th October 2012 at Dewan Sultan Iskandar (DSI), UTM, Skudai.
Participants from different kind of faculties joined in to support and show innovative and creative spirit, including students and researchers from Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Projects and research were demonstrated to the visitors. Hands-on demonstration set up was also included for the visitors to experience the excitements and acknowledge new ideas and concept regarding to each project presented.
Our groups have sent four projects which under Dr. Ahmad ‘Athif Mohd Faudzi. All the project that was presented in the exhibition which are Intelligent Pnuematic Actuator (IPA) System and It’s Application on Chair’s Seat Panel, Real-time Hand Gestures System for Mobile Robots Control, Wireless Switch In Smart Home Application and Soft Hand for Agriculture Application which was conducted by Nu’man, Khairuddin, Muhammad, Omar and The for the Pneumatic System, Rusydi, Ili and Sanjoy for Soft Actuator, Muhammad Asyraf and Chai Chang Kai for Hand Gestures and Irfan and Ridhuan for Smart Switch. The concept of IPA is basically pneumatic cylinders which are consists of PSoC (brain), pressure sensor, optical encoder and valve. It’s a novel creation by Dr Ahmad Athif which comes with a brilliant idea that makes pneumatic system more intelligent and useful. Intelligent Pneumatic Actuator (IPA) System and It’s Application on Chair’s Seat Panel is a intelligent yet creative project which attract visitors to learn and acknowledge new ideas that was created and developed by researcher from FKE and also goes to others project.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore
20th Sept – Our group have visited the robotic research lab in Mechanical and Aerospace Faculty, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. The main purpose of the visit was to share the technology applied on a propulsion system for marine vessels using flexible mechanism.
During the visit, Prof. KH Low from mechatronics department explained that the research on propulsion system was inspired by biomimetic. The professor mentioned that the most popular robot in biomimetic area for underwater is Robot Tuna, 1995.
For over 8 years, KH Low has started to develop his first underwater fish robot called Nanyang Knifefish I (NKF I), followed by Nanyang Knifefish II (NKF II) and Nanyang Knifefish III (NKF III). He also developed other underwater robots such as Nanyang Arowana Fish, Bionic Manta and many more.
There are many applications can be applied based on those underwater robots. Some of them are for military, industrial or consumer product. Maybe in the future, a group of underwater robots can perform as spies! Who knows…
Climbing and Walking Robot- CLAWAR 2012
The international conference of climbing and walking robot 2012 was held at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore USA on July 23-26, 2012. CLAWAR Association will be incharged in organizing CLAWAR conference annually since 1998, mostly in Europe and Southeast Asian countries. The CLAWAR 2012 conference was organized by CLAWAR Association together with US universities and US government organization.
The event generally includes presentations from people all over the world involved in fast growing field nowadays, Mobile robotics. I represented one of the paper from our group that was accapted in the conference, entitle “Application of New Braided Soft Actuator Design in Biomimetic Robot Locomotion”. Since I was the only participant from Malaysia, having educational experiences from various people from different country was interesting and great. Besides attending plenary talks, other researcher conference presentations and poster presentations, there were laboratory visit at Johns Hopkins University. Participating laboratories were Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics and the Locomotion in Mechanical and Biological Systems Lab.
International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics – AIM 2012
The IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM) is an offspring of the flagship Mechatronics journal, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, inaugurated in 1997. The purpose of AIM 2012, following the footsteps of the previous editions, is to promote activities in various areas of mechatronics by providing a forum for exchange of ideas, presentation of technical achievements and discussion of future directions. The AIM brings together an international community of experts to discuss the state-of-the-art, new research results, perspectives of future developments, and innovative applications relevant to mechatronics, robotics, control, automation, and related areas.
During AIM2012, our group have presented two papers which are “Nonlinear Mathematical Model of an Intelligent Pneumatic Actuator (IPA) Systems: Position and Force Controls” and “Development of Bending Soft Actuator with Different Braided Angles”. The conference was held on July 11-14, 2012 at Ambassador Hotel in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
